The romantic period derived its name from a movement in German literature to revive the poetic legends of the Middle Ages that had been written in the romance languages.
The main difference from Classic music is degree: Romantic music is more individual in expressing feelings and transcending conventions.
Main piano composers in this period: Chopin, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Liszt, and Brahms
The main characteristics of Romantic music:
Rhythm- rubato, triplets, complex rhythms
Tonality- remote modulation, chromatic and enharmonic relations
Melody- longer, irregular phrases, thematic development
Texture- thicker, more doubling
Harmony- homophonic, chromatic, dissonance, complex
Dynamics- extreme dynamics ppp or fff
Tone colour- very important; colour used to create atmosphere
Structure- symphonic poems, opera, solo song
